With spring fever finally underway, Live, Work, Play residents can lose the winter gloves and add a different seasonal accessory—a tricked out bicycle. It’s no longer a secret that biking is a great way to tone your muscles, relax your mind, and reduce your carbon footprint all with one turn of a pedal. What you might be unaware of is the fact that biking from one location to the next is all part of a spring day in the city. Wilmington, Delaware is home to more than 800 unique bicycle trails designed to promote an earth-friendly alternative to driving. Here are the highlights of the trails near you.
Route #1: The Christiana Riverwalk Route (1.3 miles)
If you’re seeking a quick trot through the city with access to restaurants, historical landmarks, and delightful scenery, this route is ideal for you. The trail begins and ends at the dock of the Shipyard Shops off of Justison Street. It winds breezily along the Christina River and through South Poplar Street. Along the way, bikers can take in the sites of historical Rosa Parks Drive and stop in at the Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge. After working up an appetite, feel free to grab lunch along the riverfront and camp out under Hare Pavilion before returning home. This trail is short, sweet, circular and it’s already been blazed for you.
Route #2: The New Castle Industrial Track Trail (3.7 miles)
In the spirit of carbon footprint reduction, this smooth, medium length trail begins at the DuPont Environmental Center, just blocks from your Live, Work, Play home. The trail is child-friendly and the scenery ranges from urban to rural as you make your way from Wilmington’s Riverfront through New Castle’s Industrial District. Not only has the path from Wilmington to New Castle already been blazed, it’s also been paved and designed to connect with other trails, so fitness enthusiasts can keep on pedaling to the East Coast Greenway Trail with the option to head back home at any time.
Route #3: Bike Route 1 (150 Miles)
Bike Route 1 is Delaware State’s first official bike only highway designed to get bikers from state to state without the hassle of battling oncoming traffic jams and other obstructions. Hardcore bikers can finally relax and ride from Wilmington to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Bethany Beach, Montchanin and other convenient locations passing beaches, outlets, strip malls, restaurants, and much more. Delawareans should be on the lookout for more upcoming bike-only highways courtesy of the eco-friendly movement.
