Residents and commuters traveling to, from or through Wilmington, Delaware experienced high volumes of traffic after the bridge over the Christina River was closed when government officials realized it was in dire need of construction.

The bridge, which typically carries approximately 90,000 vehicles daily, was said to be standing on a tilt posing a possible danger for travelers. The necessary construction required an 11-mile shutdown of major Highway I-495.

As such, the 90,000+ travelers were forced onto I-95 to join hundreds of thousands of commuters and beachgoers. Drivers from Florida to Maine, from Wilmington to Philadelphia, from Baltimore to D.C. and just about everywhere in between were affected by the road closure. Even the president, who was recently spotted in Wilmington’s legendary Charcoal Pit, took notice.

Something had to be done to help accommodate the many travelers spending hours of their time in traffic on long summer mornings, evenings, afternoons and nights. Local eateries put their heads together to come up with a solution and decided that the answer was an epic event entitled “Wilmington after Work”.

The city is making the best of the situation by encouraging commuters, workers, beachgoers and local residents to stay in town after work and help themselves to delightful $4.95 specials in some of the hottest local spots.
